Holiday Insight: Valentine's Day
General Information
Over the centuries, Valentine's Day has become a tender-hearted holiday when we all take time to say "I love you" to those who are near and dear to our hearts. Whether that's achieved through a sentimental hand-written note, a carefully selected greeting card, a dozen roses, a box of candy, or even an e-card, Valentine's Day is special to all who receive a token of affection on that day.

History of Valentine's Day
St. Valentine's Day, as it was originally dubbed, boasts a variety of colorful legends that attest to its beginnings. The most commonly heard is the story of a third century Roman priest named Valentine, who was jailed by Emperor Claudius II for performing secret wedding ceremonies despite the Emperor's ban on marriage. Valentine was jailed for defying the Emperor and later fell in love with the jailor's daughter. It is said that, before his death, he wrote a profession of love to the young lady and signed it "From your Valentine," a phrase that is still used today in many greeting cards.

Others believe the holiday coincides with the pagan love festival called Lupercalia and some profess that the date marks the death of St. Valentine in 270 AD.

Date of Celebration
This holiday is celebrated on February 14th worldwide.
